Baby Shower Tips: Planning the Menu

6 things to keep in mind when deciding on Baby Shower Food!  Don't know what to put on the menu? Below are six tips to help you narrow some food choices that are best for the shower you're hosting and mommy to be!

1. How many people are coming?

If many people are coming (15 or more), it would be a LOT of work to plan an entire meal for everyone. Rather, fingerfood, beverages, and appetizers would be perfect. Sandwiches and soups might be a good idea. But if you only have a small group coming (less than 10), then a full meal might not be too much work. It all depends on how much effort you want to put into the baby shower menu.

2. What time of day is the baby shower?
You want your food and menu to reflect the respective time of day. For example, if you have a baby shower in the evening, dinner type of foods would be more appropriate than breakfast foods.

3. What is the baby shower theme?
There are some of the cutest ideas to incorporate your theme into the baby shower food. Click here for some themed baby shower food ideas. Making food to match your theme adds an extra touch to your baby shower that really emphasizes your theme, adds to the atmosphere, and impresses everyone who sees it. This is a party! Food should be fun!

4. What type of people are coming to the shower?
When I say "type" I mean: are your guests more the "BBQ chicken and potato salad" type or "Shrimp platter with vinaigrette salad wraps" type? Know your guests and choose the baby shower menu accordingly.

5. How much time do you have?
Most likely, you don't have much spare time. So, simple is best. Simple doesn't mean plain or boring, it just means choosing baby shower menu items that are easy and fast to prepare. The recipes found above are a great collection of quick and easy baby shower food items to choose from that are simple yet delicious appetizers, snacks, and beverages. Make as many or as few as you think will satiate your guests.

6. Is anyone going to help you prepare the baby shower food?
If there is one area that I would suggest that this be the one! Assigning several other friends or family members of the expectant mother to prepare food will save you a LOT of time and work. Not that preparing baby shower food is hard, it isn't. It's just that you, as the hostess, have so many other things to plan for. So having a few people each bringing one or two baby shower menu items will save you a lot of work. Plus, you won't have to be running around the day of the shower making sure that the food is ready. You can take comfort in the fact that the party food is taken care of and you can focus on finishing everything else!

Baby Shower Game: Gift Timer

Here is a cute game to play while mommy to be is opening her gift! A possible way for a guest who is not into games to still win a prize!

When to Play:
While guest of honor is opening gifts.

Supplies:
Oven Timer or Stopwatch

How to Play:
  • Set the timer for any amount of minutes your desire.  (We usually choose about 3-4 minutes depending on the amount of prizes we have left to give away or alloted for the game).
  • Each time the timer goes off, whomever present the mommy to be is opening wins a prize.

Everyone knows that the person to catch the bridal bouquet is the next to get married, but did you know that the person who bought the 7th gift the mommy to be opens is the next to have a baby? Don’t let the mommy to be know this, so she can’t “pick” the next mommy.

Baby Shower Game: Make Mommy to Be A Hat

This is a quick cute baby shower game that is played at most baby showers.  It's a traditional game made to help the guest of honor stand out more!

When sending out invitations, ask the guests to put lots of bows and ribbons on their presents when they wrap them, most guests will do this anyway.  Get a paper plate and turn it upside down.  As mommy to be opens her gifts, remove the bows and ribbons neatly from the package.  Glue, tape or staple the bows and ribbon to the top of the plate to create your hat.  Pile on as many bows and ribbons as you possibly can until all the gifts are open.

Once you have your hat, take a piece of string or ribbon and put it on mommy's head and tie it under her chin.  She has to wear this hat until it falls off on it's own, or until time is up.  We usually make her keep it on until a few pictures are taken of the guest of honor by herself, and with daddy to be.

Every Little Bottom

March of Dimes is proud to partner with the Huggies® Every Little Bottom program to raise awareness about diaper need and address the issue in our communities across the U.S.

A recent study reveals that one in three American moms are in diaper need, struggling to provide diapers for their babies. The study also revealed that nearly one in five moms in diaper need have extended the amount of time they leave their babies in wet or soiled disposable diapers. Babies kept in wet, dirty diapers for extended periods of time may experience physical and emotional suffering.

To kick off the campaign, Huggies will donate up to 20 million diapers in the United States in the next eight months. Huggies will begin the donations with two million diapers given to ten local diaper banks across the country.
